Fatigue Management Standards Are Being Driven Down

Approaches to fatigue management vary across States. NSW applies the highest standards – setting legislative limits to the number of hours a driver can spend on a shift and minimum rest breaks and detailed regulations. Some other states also support this option.

It has been proposed, however, to give employers more ‘flexibility’ in how they manage fatigue under the new national laws. This potentially means making drivers and other rail workers work longer shifts.

That’s not managing fatigue – that’s a recipe for disaster.

Every road user is told that drowsy drivers die. The same rule applies on rail. The RTBU believes that the highest standards on fatigue management should be applied across all states and territories.
