National Competencies and Qualifications Standards Are Being Undermined
The RTBU supports national standards for assessing the competency of rail workers. These standards have already been established in rail safety law, and some states are already following them.
Other states, however, are pushing for the national standards to be abolished, and replaced by a model where individual rail operators determine whether rail safety workers are competent enough to do the job.
The competencies and qualifications underpinning jobs of rail workers are critical to maintaining the highest levels of safety on our rail networks. The RTBU believes that assessment standards for rail workers should be set as they currently are by an independent national authority – not by operators.
